- April '08 -- LEARN ABOUT MICHIGAN’S PENDING WATER WITHDRAWAL BILLS AND THE SCIENCE BEHIND THEM
HRWC invites the public to attend our Annual Meeting Thursday, April 24 at 5:30 pm at the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens, 1800 North Dixboro Road.
The meeting features a talk on Water Withdrawal and the current legislative efforts for Michigan in support of the Great Lakes Compact by Paul Seelbach, Fisheries Research Manager for the MDNR and Co-Chair of the Legislative Groundwater Conservation Advisory Council. All are invited to arrive at 4:30 pm for a guided tour of the grounds to learn about the recent stream bank and trail restoration efforts at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. HRWC will also present program information and volunteer awards and conclude with a brief board meeting.

The third Millers Creek Film Festival of short films about our connection to the creeks in the Huron River system was held at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. A review of the program and list of winners can be found at the above link.
- March '08 -- RIPARIAN BUFFER BROCHURE NOW ON HRWC WEBSITE
HRWC's Riparian Buffer Initiative project has developed a Riparian Buffer Brochure, issued 2007, pdf file is 543kb. Learn about using plants as buffers to lakeshores and streambanks. The brochure covers how plant buffers protect the water and what property owners can do on their property to help improve streamside/lakeside buffers and what citizens can do to encourage their communities to use plant buffers.
- January '08 -- BIORESERVE PROJECT UPDATE
Check out our updated Bioreserve map and updated Bioreserve Project webpage, then call to volunteer in the winter and/or spring-summer activities.
Winter 2008: participate in our roadside survey of the 1700 natural areas in the watershed. This will involve driving to the natural areas and completing a one-page form that asks very general questions about the site.
Spring-Summer 2008: participate in the on-site field assessment on the natural areas the roadside survey has determined have potential for being of high ecological quality. Click on the link for detailed information on these volunteer opportunities.

- June '07 -- RIVERSAFE HOMES: a program of Washtenaw County
The Washtenaw County Drain Commissioner has created the RiverSafe Homes program to enable County residents to identify water quality protection activities they currently practice around their homes, and to commit to additional pollution prevention practices that they may not have considered before. They then receive a "RiverSafe Home" decal to display at their home. With over 138,000 households currently in Washtenaw County, the RiverSafe Homes Program has a great "cumulative effect" opportunity to inform residents about water quality protection while reducing pollutants in Washtenaw County waterways. - June '06 -- HRWC'S ELIZABETH RIGGS ON RADIO BROADCAST!
On Wednesday, June 14 Elizabeth Riggs, HRWC Watershed Planner, did a radio interview about the Buffer Initiative. The interview was part of the "Issues of the Environment" series hosted by David Farr on WEMU. To listen to this interview through the internet, go to the Program Guide and click on the June 14 show.
- April '03 -- link to article in the April 20 Toledo Blade that reports on renovation of a building using new technique to recycling gray water to cut down on water consumption. The newly renovated building will use water from sinks and showers that has been filtered on site to flush toilets, saving 6,200 gallons of water a day.
- October '02 -- The
Environmental Monitor (your source for updated environmental data about the air, water, land, and community in Washtenaw County) website debuts. The website is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency EMPACT project and provides data supplied by a consortium of agencies including HRWC.
PHOTO SEARCH
Do you have photos of the Huron River or its creeks and streams? We will be featuring seasonal photos of the Huron River on several HRWC webpages and we invite our members and website users to submit photos.
Be sure to include on a separate piece of paper: (a) the photographer's name, address, and telephone number, (b) the location of the photos (both waterbody name and location) and (c) the date taken. Photos that show people enjoying the water resource are particularly requested. All seasons are requested.
Photographs can be submitted by e-mail. Send photo attached as a jpeg file to webmaster@hrwc.org.
